A fully restored Ercol No.290/F182 small Rocking chair/Nursing chair from the Windsor Utility Range, manufactured circa 1950s

This low seat rocking/nursing chair is comfortable, giving full size adult seating, but is very compact. The chair has a bow, 6 spindle seat-back made from Beech wood. The D shaped chair seat is made from solid English Elm and is supported by contrasting tapered legs, stretchers and rockers, also made from Beech. This chair would be perfect as a child’s chair, or a nursing chair for a smaller adult.

The Windsor Utility Range was authorised by The British Board of Trade to increase furniture production post World War 2 and the chair was produced under licence by Ercol under the Government’s Utility Furniture Scheme (1945- 52).  The chair was manufactured between the above dates and has CC41 and the chair model number 290 stamped on the rear seat. This denotes that the chair was produced under the Government’s Utility Furniture Scheme.

The whole chair has been fully restored and refinished, striped back to bare wood, sanded through the grades, grain filled and stained before being polished with shellac and wax to provide a beautiful durable finish. showing off  the elm seat with its lovely grain pattern, with mid golden brown tones.  E rcol is a name synonymous with top quality craftsmanship and this stunning little chair is no exception, as it remains a timeless piece of furniture. It would grace and be a focal point of any setting, furnished in either a contemporary, or traditional style.

I do everything to ensure each piece that leaves the Happy Furniture Studio is finished to a high standard, however this piece will have some marks that reflect its age and history and this is one of the unique things about owning a vintage piece of furniture.
